In traditional post and beam construction, Hashira must combine strength to support the weight of the home, with excellent appearance and working qualities. Douglas Fir and Hemlock are used by builders throughout Japan for its ability to meet these criteria.
Hashira from Interfor is specifically graded for post application in traditional Japanese construction where strength, stability and appearance are crucial.
Minimum Standards:- Knot size is a maximum 50% of the cross section if enclosed, 40% if open at the edge. This assures support strength and reduces chances of warping around local grain deviations.
- Non-seasoned products are free of heart centers to avoid checking and twisting after installation.
- To enhance the stability of the post, compression wood in damaging form is not allowed.
- To maintain a high quality appearance, non-structural defects such as wane, pin holes, stain and skip in surfacing are severely restricted or eliminated.
