Japan Structural - Small Structural

Due to their superior performance characteristics, Douglas Fir and Hemlock are the right choice for small structural components of a Zairai home.

NEDA

Characteristics of Interfor's Neda are strictly controlled to ensure bending strength and stability.

Minimum Standards:
  • A maximum of 50% knot displacement ensures bending strength requirements. In preliminary tests this restriction proved that the product could exceed standard load requirements 100% of the time. When a safety factor of 3 times the normal load capacity was applied, 98% of the product still exceeded the load requirement without failure.
  • The requirement of a 1 in 6 slope in grain means added strength in floor joist applications.
  • Wane is limited to a maximum 10% of the surface. This allows proper installation and fastening of the flooring.
  • Dressing must be of a high quality to provide for a level floor so skips are limited to occasional hit and miss.

SUJIKAI

Sujikai's use as a traditional bracing product makes it very important that characteristics affecting tensile and compressive strength are strictly controlled.

Interfor's minimum Standards for Sujikai include:
  • As in Neda, the knot size for Sujikai is limited to a maximum of 50% displacement for high tensile strength.
  • Since Sujikai is a key component providing strength and stability to structural walls, slope of the grain is restricted to 1 in 6.
  • For proper installation Sujikai must be straight. Crook and bow are limited to a maximum of .4% at the time of grading, and .2% for twist.

MABASHIRA

In grading Mabashira, stability and edge nailing capability are of prime consideration.

Minimum Standards for Interfor's Mabashira include:
  • Wane is limited to less than 10% of the surface to provide clean edges for attaching wall boards.
  • Non-seasoned shipments are limited to a minimum of 80%
  • FOHC (Free of Heart Centre) to enhance lineal stability.
  • Slope of grain is a minimum of 1 in 6 to provide strong resistance to sheer in compression.
  • Twist and crook are limited to a maximum of .2% at the time of grading.
