It is dimensionally stable and universally recognized for its superior strength-to-weight ratio. Its high specific gravity provides excellent nail and plate-holding ability. The species also enjoys a documented superior performance against strong forces resulting from natural phenomena such as winds, storms and earthquakes. It is the ideal structural wood for framing lumber in residential, light commercial, multistory and industrial construction. It is also specified in extremely demanding specialty applications, such as rail & road bridges, electrical transmission arms and mine guides.
Douglas Fir dries easily and rapidly, with little tendency to check and with good dimensional stability. It machines well, has excellent turning properties, glues well and has moderate nail and screw holding ability. It can be stained or painted to a very good finish.
